Texas Libertarian Officials to Sweep 25 Cities in Candidate Roundup
AUSTIN - August 10, 2007 - Libertarian Party of Texas (LPT) officials are planning a ten-week, 25-city tour through Texas to round up candidates for the November 2008 elections. The public and press are invited.
The tour will start with an event on September 8, 2007 in Austin. (Complete schedule information at bottom.)
LPT Executive Director Wes Benedict said, "If you're a dissatisfied voter, it's time to stop complaining about politicians and run for office yourself! It's fun, it's free, and it's easier than you think! Come find out about it." Libertarian Party candidates pay no filing fees in Texas.
The party will make nominations at conventions held in March and June, 2008.
LPT Chair Pat Dixon said, "With daily stories about the record low approval ratings of our Republican President and Democratic Congress, we think voters are ready for Libertarian politicians that will deliver smaller government. Candidates don't have to agree with our platform 100 percent, but we do have a litmus test. It's called the World's Smallest Political Quiz. We want to be sure that our candidates will stand up for liberty. Everyone who attends our roundup events will be asked to take this quick, interesting quiz and post their results on a political freedom map."
The World's Smallest Political Quiz was created by the Advocates for Self-Government: http://www.theadvocates.org
Dixon continued, "These events will start out with an introduction to the Libertarian Party covering its history and objectives. Then we'll give some training on the nuts and bolts of political activism. We'll also talk about the effects of Ron Paul's presidential campaign on our party--we've recently been inundated with questions about Ron Paul, who ran for president as a Libertarian in 1988."
Dixon continued, "We'll have all the necessary paperwork to sign up candidates at these events. We'll even be taking photos of the candidates."
The LPT had a record 168 nominees on the November 2006 ballot. "The State Libertarian Executive Committee set an aggressive goal of 250 candidates for November 2008 at our recent quarterly meeting in Dallas," said Dixon.
