Texas Libertarians expect record number of candidates
AUSTIN - May 12, 2008 - The Libertarian Party of Texas (LPT) expects 174 Libertarians to appear on the November 2008 ballot in Texas. That would be a new record for the party.
Party conventions have nominated 131 candidates for district offices, and 33 candidates for county offices.
The LPT expects to nominate an additional eight candidates for statewide offices at its state convention in June. The party also expects the Libertarian Presidential and Vice-Presidential nominees to appear on the ballot.
"In 2004 we overcame high ballot access hurdles, created by Republicans and Democrats, to become the only third party on the Texas ballot. We are taking full advantage of our ballot-qualified status," said Wes Benedict, LPT Executive Director. "Texans will have a real choice this November, not just the illusion of choice presented by the Republicans and Democrats."
The current record of 168 candidates was set in 2006.
