LIBERTARIAN PARTY OF TEXAS STATEMENT ON THE DEATHS OF AT LEAST 50 PEOPLE SEEKING A NEW LIFE IN AMERICA

Libertarian Party of Texas mourns the needless and tragic loss of life and demands that America honor her promise.

Austin, TX, June 28, 2022 – On June 27th, 2022, at least 50 people were left locked in a semi-trailer on a sweltering 101 degree day in San Antonio while attempting to migrate to the self proclaimed “Freest Country on Earth.”

The Libertarian Party of Texas is mourning this unthinkable tragedy and stands with the families of those who died. This is the deadliest tragedy in history at our southern border and stains the very principles on which this nation was founded. We are a nation of immigrants. It is time for us to remember where we came from, how we got here, and to demand the change necessary to prevent these disastrous situations from ever occurring again.

Instead of mourning the unnecessary death of 50 people attempting to secure the blessings of liberty in America, Governor Greg Abbott decided to take to social media to point fingers and lie to the American people about the true nature of this tragedy:

“These deaths are on Biden. They are a result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law.” -Texas Governor, Greg Abbott

It is precisely the enforcement of our illiberal immigration laws that have led to an egregious 7.5 million person backlog of would-be legal immigrants, forcing people to take unthinkable risks out of desperation to gain access to the promises of liberty and opportunity available here.

“This is obviously a tragic event, and it is the consequence of the Republican and Democrats failing to enact immigration reform. The truth is they don’t actually want reform, because it allows them to blame each other when tragedies like this happen.” – Libertarian Candidate for Governor of Texas, Mark Tippetts

The Libertarian Party of Texas demands immediate action to eliminate the immigration backlog, and set up a legal, orderly system that does not create undue burdens on ordinary people seeking freedom and prosperity. The new system must not discriminate against people based on socioeconomic status, country of origin, or any immutable characteristic. We advocate for the freedom of individuals to live, work, study, and travel, with respect for others’ rights and freedoms, without government impediment. We further support the free, fair, and voluntary exchange of currency, goods, labor, services, and ideas, whereby all may prosper through free market principles and individual responsibility.

The Libertarian Party of Texas is the state affiliate for the third largest and fastest growing political party in the United States. LPTexas seeks to elect Libertarians and influence legislation that focuses on individual rights, self ownership, and limited government.
